The choice to renovate, buy a different or new home or maybe even build is a huge financial decision. For many families it is the biggest decision, you will ever make.
You find that your home is in the perfect neighborhood, you are happy where you are, but you would like your home to reflect more contemporary trends. This the time to consider renovating.
You would rather spend the relatively smaller amount of money on a renovation than on moving and keep your money for other purposes, whatever they might be. This is also the time to choose to do a renovation.
There are many questions to ask yourself to help determine the nature of your renovations. Your lifestyle priorities need to be carefully sifted. If you have an unlimited budget, just do everything that you want. If the situation is otherwise, it is time to start thinking about what is really important to you. Everyone is different.
Here are a few of the quesitions that you might want to ask yourself.
♦ Is a new kitchen the most important thing for you. Is it okay, but just needs updating? Is the space large enough for what you need or are you going to need to expand your space by stealing from another room or building an addition?
♦ Do you need more space for entertaining or want to create a great flow between indoor and outdoor social spaces?
♦ Perhaps you want to remove walls and create more dramatic spaces.
♦ Your children have left home and you want the luxery of a larger modernized walk in closet or enjoy the comfort of a spacious ensuite.
♦ Do you need a mother-in-law suite for an aging family member or are you thinking of adding a legal suite as a mortgage helper?
♦ Are you aging yourself? Do you want to make sure doors have been widened, the laundry moved upstairs, landscaping has been redone to eliminate stairs? Things that are not a problem today can be a serious issue only a few short years down the road. The better your plannig the longer you will be comfortable in your home.
♦ Have you got a hobby that requires special space, electrical fixtures or plumbing?
The choices available within any project are endless,
they are determined by your personal
priorities.
